Modern Exterminating Company, one of the Midlands’ premier pest control companies, has joined the Greater Lexington Chamber and recently celebrated its membership with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Modern Exterminating, which opened for business on October 3, 1955, is the oldest, largest locally-owned independent pest control company in Columbia. The company serves a 40-mile radius from downtown Columbia with over 11,000 customers in the area. George G. Matthews, Sr. and Katherine E. Matthews started Modern Exterminating 60 years ago, and the company has remained under the ownership of the Matthews family ever since.

“We are a family-owned business for 60 years,” said Owner and President Glenn Matthews, who calls “helping solve people’s pest issues in a professional manner” the most gratifying part of the job.

Modern Exterminating employs 36 people with over 700 years of combined experience in the pest control field. That knowledge and expertise is one thing that sets Modern Exterminating apart from the competition, according to Matthews, who said the plans for the future include continuing to grow the business.

The company prides itself on termite control, pest control, and moisture control and repairs. They also offer mosquito control, gutter installation, a lawn pest reduction program, a wildlife control referral service and wood preservation treatments. Modern Exterminating Company offers environmentally responsible pest control solutions.

Modern Exterminating, located at 2119 Gadsden Street in Columbia, serves the counties of Lexington, Richland, Newberry, Fairfield, Kershaw and Sumter.
