One of the Greater Lexington Chamber’s newest members is battling a serious issue in the community and recently celebrated its membership with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Dickerson Children’s Advocacy Center, located at 140 Gibson Road, is on a mission “to provide comprehensive assessment and treatment services to physically and sexually abused children ages 0-18 throughout the Midlands of SC.”

Dickerson Children’s Advocacy Center, which has been in business for more than 21 years, offers evidence-based treatment services, and both forensic medical and forensic interview services by highly trained and licensed professionals. The center specializes in child-friendly and trauma-focused services and also aids in the investigation and treatment of child abuse and neglect.

The most gratifying aspect of the job is “seeing the resiliency of children and families who have experienced victimization and trauma and also partnering with generous and caring individuals and groups in the community,” according to Executive Director Carol W. Yarborough.

The center, which has nine full-time employees and one part-time employee, was moved to Lexington from West Columbia to be more centrally located. The move puts the center much closer to the main referral sources of Lexington law enforcement and the Department of Social Services and child protection offices.

Plans for the future include continuing to meet the needs for child investigative and treatment services of Lexington County’s growing population. The center also looks to expand education to the community while providing community-based services with partners through collaboration to serve the families of Lexington County.

“All businesses can benefit from understanding how their employees and their customers are impacted by intimate and family violence and that by being willing to learn more about the issue and acknowledge that our children are living in drug endangered environments and witnessing violence, that they can help stop this public health issue and make all our lives healthier with improved economic health and safe environments for growth and living together,” Yarborough said.
