IN THE PAST...

NepronNephron “comes home” with $313 million investment and groundbreaking

Pure exuberance marked today’s groundbreaking for Nephron Pharmaceuticals Corporation in West Columbia. Maybe nothing less would be expected for a $313 million investment in Lexington County, brought here by one of its home-grown success stories.

“I see so many Lexington High students we could have a reunion, and I see so many pharmacists we could fill a scrip,” joked Lou Wood Kennedy, the Lexington County native who owns Nephron with her husband Bill. Based in Orlando, FL, Nephron manufactures respiratory medications and has other centers in Arizona and Kentucky. It will eventually employ 707 people at its 1.2 million- square-foot building in the Saxe Gotha Industrial Park, near the Amazon Distribution Center.

Competitivness Agenda Update

U.S. Senate passes $109 billion transportation bill
The U.S. Senate passed a $109 billion bipartisan highway and transit bill last week by a 74-22 vote. The legislation maintains investment levels through fiscal year 2013, contains policy and program reforms and strengthens highway and auto safety by authorizing federal road, bridge, mass transit and highway safety programs through September 2013. The legislation also gives states more discretion on how to spend money and increases a credit assistance program for transportation projects to $1 billion.
The bill now heads to the House. The House has not confirmed whether it will take up the Senate's version of the transportation bill or continue pursuing its own version.
