In 2008 Lexington had a per capita personal income (PCPI) of $35,960. This PCPI ranked 6th in the state and was 111 percent of the state average, $32,495, and 90 percent of the national average, $40,166. The 2008 PCPI reflected an increase of 0.8 percent from 2007. The 2007-2008 state change was 1.8 percent and the national change was 2.0 percent. In 1998 the PCPI of Lexington was $25,506 and ranked 5th in the state. The 1998-2008 average annual growth rate of PCPI was 3.5 percent. The average annual growth rate for the state was 3.7 percent and for the nation was 4.0 percent.

Demographic Report

Lexington County is located in the Midlands region of South Carolina. It is uniquely positioned halfway between New York and Miami, within 24-hour ground access to more than 70 percent of the U.S. market. The total area of the county is 699 square miles. The county seat is the Town of Lexington, located approximately 12 miles from downtown Columbia.

Taxes

The income tax structure for South Carolina follows the federal income tax laws.  Your federal taxable income is the starting point in determining your states liability.  South Carolina state sales tax is 6%.  Seniors 85 years and older are entitled to a 1% exemption in the state sales tax rate.

For property taxes, the real estate which is owner occupied is assessed at 4% of market value.

Personal property tax is collected annually on cars, trucks, motorcycles, recreational vehicles and boats. personal cars, trucks and motorcycles are assessed at 6% of the market value.

Housing costs in the region are below the national average. In 2008, the median price o f a new home was $128, 508.  The average rent for apartment communities was $619 a month for a one bedroom, $841 for a two bedroom an $1064 for a three bedroom.
