On the Table Central Carolina Community Foundation
October 22, 2019
- October 22, 2019
Meet. Share. Do
On the Table is a one-day opportunity to gather over mealtime conversations to build personal connections and explore how we can work together to make our communities stronger.
Hosted with support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, On the Table replicates an annual civic engagement initiative of the same name developed by The Chicago Community Trust in 2014.
The next day of conversations will be on October 22, 2019! We invite you and your families, neighbors, colleagues, and friends —old and new— to pull up a chair, share a meal, and discuss the ways in which we — as individuals and as a collective — can, and do, work to make our communities stronger.
Our inaugural day of conversations was held in 2018 with the following results:
- 250 conversations held in one day
- 1,500 participants made their voices heard
- 71% spoke with at least one person they did not already know
- 89% said they will likely take specific action on an issue they discussed at On the Table
Following the day of conversations, participants were asked to take a survey to provide a deeper understanding of the issues they deemed most important to our community. The survey was conducted online by Hart Research Associates and Public Opinion Strategies. The results of the survey can be found at OnTheTableCola.org.
WHAT IS ON THE TABLE?
On Wednesday, October 22, 2019, residents of Richland and Lexington Counties will come together to share ideas for improving our region. On the Table is a one-day opportunity to gather over mealtime conversations to build personal connections and explore how we can work together to make our communities stronger.
Your voice matters. And when we share our voices and listen to each other, we have the power to make our communities great. It simply takes a conversation.
We invite you and your families, neighbors, colleagues, and friends to pull up a chair, share a meal, and discuss the way in which we — as individuals and as a collective — can, and do, work to make our communities stronger.
People from Richland and Lexington Counties, from all walks of life, are invited to host and attend On the Table discussions.
Registration for hosting a table in 2019 will be available late summer. Sign up for our email updates at the bottom of this webpage to be notified when registration opens.
HOST A TABLE
A host commits to hosting a conversation on October 22, 2019 over breakfast, lunch, dinner, a coffee break, or any time in between. The invitation list is up to you —friends, family, colleagues, neighbors — and the conversation can be hosted anywhere.
Before the conversation, you'll receive a Host Toolkit with everything you need, including a conversation guide and suggested conversation prompts. You'll also be invited to attend Lead the Table, a special training and networking session.
Everyone is welcome to serve as a host.
JOIN A CONVERSATION
Many people will receive an invitation to attend an On the Table conversation from an individual or organizational host. If you're interested in participating but don't have a host, we invite you to attend a public table!
An updated list of public tables will be listed on the website in September 2019.
BE A SUPERHOST
Superhosts are organizations — nonprofits, places of worship, businesses, schools, civic organizations, and others — that commit to hosting at least 5 tables, 6 to 12 people per table. If this describes your organization, please contact us at (803) 254-5601 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
We know that big ideas can spring from small conversations and that people invest in what they help create. At Central Carolina Community Foundation, we are committed to bringing people together to create a more generous, vibrant, and engaged community.
On the Table conversations are meant to bring a diversity of voices to the discussion of who we are, our vision for the future, and what we can do to get there together. What issues and opportunities should we address? And, what actions can we take together to make our communities better places for all residents?
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER OCTOBER 22TH?
All On the Table participants will be invited to complete a short email survey about their conversations that will cover important issues and themes, big ideas, and what matters most to them. We want to hear from every voice!
A report highlighting the survey response will be issued by the Community Foundation after On the Table and will help inform efforts to improve our community in the months ahead.
