Greystone/I-126 Interchange Undergoes Makeover, Riverbanks-Style

Riverbanks Zoo and GardensSite Dedication Planned for Monday, April 23 Near Zoo Entrance

[Columbia, SC] – Landscape beautification along the Greystone Boulevard/I-126 interchange will culminate on Monday, April 23, with a site dedication and tree planting near the entrance to Riverbanks Zoo and Garden.

The City of Columbia’s Public Works Forestry and Beautification Division began work to transform the barren green space in early March as part of the GRO1000 beautification project funded by the U.S. Conference of Mayors and Scott’s Miracle-Gro Company. The once lacking landscape is now filled with a variety of palmettos, grasses, lilies and elephant ears.

“This phase in the city’s ongoing efforts to beautify Columbia’s gateways complements the work already completed by Riverbanks’ horticulture staff, which leaves a much more pleasing impression on visitors entering and leaving the Zoo from Greystone Boulevard,” said Satch Krantz, executive director of Riverbanks Zoo and Garden.

Representatives from the U.S. Conference of Mayors and Scott’s Miracle-Gro Company will be among other dignitaries and special guests during the dedication planned for Monday, April 23, at 11:00am. Also, as part of the ceremony, one student who has shown exceptional ecological awareness will be recognized with the “Give Back to Gro” Youth Gardener Award.

Following the dedication, from 11:30am until 2:00pm, guests can visit interactive tables at the Zoo where kids will have an opportunity to explore various aspects of growing and gardening. Kids can watch a hands-on worm composting demonstration by Riverbanks award-winning Junior Master Gardeners, stop by the Scott’s Miracle-Gro station for a mini-greenhouse kit complete with seeds, soil and plant food, and create a seed-starting necklace with help from the National Gardening Association.

Please Note: Parking will be available for guests attending the dedication in the Carpet One parking lot located at 200 Candi Lane in Columbia. Members of the media planning to cover the event should contact Susan O’Cain at 803.603.2325 or socain@riverbanks.org.

Airport Commission Chair: Finish John Hardee Expressway

Anne Sinclair

Completing the John Hardee Expressway at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport is critical to the Midlands’ economy, Anne Sinclair told Chamber members at Tuesday’s breakfast meeting. “It means jobs, more money, and more efficiency,” said Sinclair, chair of the airport commission. “UPS has projected they would save a half-million dollars if it were
finished.” The completion of the $76.8 million Phase Two of the expressway means other
area businesses, including Amazon and Nephron Pharmaceuticals, could transport their
products much faster as well.

“We need money to make this happen,” Sinclair said, adding that the Central Midlands
Council of Governments, Lexington County Council and Randy Halfacre with the MidState
Chambers Coalition have been supportive of getting the expressway completed. “We need
your help.”

Chair of the commission since February, Sinclair provided an update, mostly positive,
about what’s going on at the airport:

• Charlotte International is still Columbia’s biggest competitor. Southwest Airlines’
decision to offer service from Charleston and Greenville/Spartanburg hasn’t affected
Columbia.”We knew people would start flying from those airports,” Sinclair said. “I’m
here to share with you that that has not occurred.”
• The airport district encompasses a lot of land–2,655 acres–and includes the Foreign
Trade Zone and Columbia Airport Enterprise Park, some of which can be used for economic development
• There are 1,500 jobs on the airport property, producing an annual payroll of $44.3
million
• To reduce costs and be more competitive, staff have been cut 37 percent since 2010
• Debt has been reduced by $12,050,000 since 2010
• Delta added 200 seats and changed prices to compete with the Charleston and
Greenville/Spartanburg airports
• Delta is adding second flights to Detroit and LaGuardia
• United Airlines will start flying to Newark and has added a fourth flight to Dulles

Airline mergers and fuel prices have caused ticket prices to rise and the
number of flights and seats to shrink, Sinclair explained. Meanwhile, the regional jets
that have been the airport’s “bread and butter” have aged and won’t be replaced. The
airport commission and staff are working to get bigger planes, and Delta has indeed added
larger planes.

“The planes that leave Columbia are full,” she said. “There are a lot of
places you can go from Columbia without stopping.” Currently the airport offers non-stop
flights to Chicago, Philadelphia, Houston, Dallas, Newark, New York, Charlotte, Atlanta,
and Washington, DC.

“We have a lot of good things going on,” Sinclair said. “We are your local
airport and we hope you will fly out of it and ‘fly with ease.’ That’s our new slogan.”

Tuesday’s breakfast meeting was sponsored by BB&T.

New Michelin expansion reflects major investment in Lexington County

Tuesday’s announcement about Michelin North America’s expansion in Lexington County has local business and government officials crowing. The State paper reported that besides building a new $550 million plant in Anderson County, the tire manufacturer plans to spend $200 million to expand its Lexington County operation and hire 125 people locally.

“It is a great day in Lexington County,” said a jubilant Bill Banning, chairman of Lexington County Council. “The $200 million investment is huge and the jobs are huge. It shows Michelin is committed to the Midlands.”

Michelin has been showing its Lexington commitment since building here in 1981. Last May the company announced it would invest $200 million and hire 270 workers. More than 2,000 people will be employed there when both expansions are complete, Banning said, adding that he and others have been working to expedite the new expansion since October.

“The compounding factors are phenomenal,” Banning said. “We’ll see more payroll. It’s going to drive everything.”

One of the Greater Lexington Chamber’s Blockbuster Partners, Michelin has two plants at its Two Notch Road site. One plant makes passenger car tires and the other makes 5-ton Earthmover tires, which are used for construction sites, mines, and quarries.

Lexington’s Earthmover plant is celebrating its 15th year, says Bryan Dunlap, its manager. “This is the fifth phase of an expansion that started in 2006,” he said, noting the Earthmover market has grown 20 percent between 2009 and 2011. “There’s an unprecedented demand for Michelin Earthmover tires throughout the world. Nearly every tire is sold before it’s produced.”

Founded in France with operations across the globe, Michelin North America is headquartered in Greenville. The Anderson County plant is in the town of Starr.

“A real key is Pete Selleck,” Banning said of the company’s chairman and president. “He’s from South Carolina and is going to be a real asset to us. He’s a 30-year Michelin employee, not some new kid on the block. He knows about community involvement. He is really committed to Michelin having a bigger presence in our community.”

Banning said he, Randy Halfacre and Ike McLeese, presidents of the Lexington and Columbia Chambers respectively, plan to invite Selleck to address their organizations in the near future.

“Michelin’s most recent investment is a testimony of Lexington County Council’s ongoing efforts to create economic prosperity for the citizens of Lexington County and the Midstate region,” Halfacre said. “It also speaks volumes for the cooperation and partnerships that have been established between local governments, communities, and business sectors. I hope everyone realizes that this is just ‘downright good stuff, y’all!’”

As the weight falls: Tracy’s “Bee Healthy” story

Vickie Gore consults with Lisa Grantt.

Tracy Fredrychowski lost seven pounds in six weeks, thanks to Bee Healthy Medical Weight Loss & Wellness. That’s good news. But maybe even more meaningful is the kindness she feels every time she walks in the door.

“They’re very caring and knowledgeable,” says Tracy, the Chamber’s website/database
manager. “They don’t prescribe phentermine and send you on your way and not worry about you. They want to make sure your body can handle that medicine.”

Like three other Chamber staffers, Tracy signed on for three months with Bee Healthy.
Owned and operated by Vickie Gore, a family nurse practitioner, and her husband Larry,
Bee Healthy has about 500 patients, all of whom undergo a health screening before
starting a weight loss program. If patients are cleared to accept phentermine, an
appetite suppressant, and B-12 Lipotropic shots, which boost metabolism, Vickie and her
staff will administer them. While the medication and injections help patients lose
weight, Vickie and her staff dispense old-fashioned compassion as well.

“If you don’t lose but gain, Vickie will sit down with you and talk to you about what you
did wrong that week,” Tracy says. “They really want you to succeed.”

Vickie, 53, knows how hard it can be to lose weight. Perimenopause added an extra dozen
pounds to her 5-foot-3½-inch frame a few years ago, she recalls, and no amount of
exercise got it off. The Bee Lite program, Bee Healthy’s sister company in Evans,
Georgia, convinced Vickie that phentermine, taken for a temporary amount of time, could
jump start the weight loss. Now she maintains her desired weight of 115 pounds with the
shots only, and has changed what she eats. “I understand that I can control my metabolism
and turn it on and turn it off.”

Until her patients reach their weight goals, Vickie remains their counselor and
cheerleader. “I’m passionate for my patients and I encourage my employees to be like
that,” she says. “Before we open the doors, every single time, we have a little meeting
and say a prayer for anyone who comes in here. I know people who are overweight are
hurting inside. They’re sensitive about that and we want to embrace and encourage them.”

Bee Healthy Medical Weight Loss & Wellness is at 5541 C Sunset Boulevard. Call 520-8644

“Oh what a night!” – Lexington Chamber’s Oyster Roast and Auction

Last week’s Oyster Roast and Auction can be summed up with that hit song by Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons. The weather was beautiful, the oysters were hot and never-ending, and the cool sounds of Cookie Music Group got people grooving. When they weren’t shucking or dancing, they were feasting on wood-fired pizza and shrimp and grits, sipping on libations and socializing, and bidding on more than 150 auction items. Meanwhile, some long-time Lexingtonians were pondering to themselves and others: Who are these people?

“There were a lot of new faces, which goes to show the community is growing and a lot of people are interested in coming together and meeting friends and making new friends,” said Randy Halfacre, the Chamber’s president/CEO. “Having close to 600 people attend our third Oyster Roast and Auction is a testimony that this function is becoming a premier event for Lexington.”

As before, the Oyster Roast was at the Saluda River Club’s Chickawa Outdoor Center. New this year was a diverse menu—wood-fired pizza from Giuseppe’s Fuoco, shrimp and grits from the Blue Marlin, gourmet eggrolls from Food for Thought Catering, and pimento cheese and chicken sausage tartlets by Dupree. Starbucks coffee and dessert was sponsored by Rogers Property Management. Guests downed close to 60 bushels of oysters, provided by U.S. Foods and roasted by Clark’s Termite and Pest Control.

Practical, luxurious, and imaginative items lined the auction tables. Bidding was particularly competitive for the set of Michelin tires, the tandem jump at SkyDive Carolina in Chester County, and the television with surround sound, donated by the
Walmarts in White Knoll and Lexington.

“We did have unique items, like my favorite, the prom package,” said Haylee Anderson, account executive. Those packages—one each for White Knoll and Lexington high schools—included salon services from Bella-Riley’s Salon & Spa, formal attire from First Impression, dinner for two at Travinia Italian Kitchen, corsages and boutonnieres from Storey’s Florist, and tickets to the proms.

For adults, The Oyster Roast and Auction was its own prom. “The word is out on the street that this is the place to be,” Halfacre said, “and what better venue than the Saluda River Club?”

Brina’s Closet- Lexington, SC: Designer labels, innovative plans

Alex Morris, Brina Salmond, Scott Wilhide

Look for designer and leading brand-name clothes at Brina’s Closet in Hutto Plaza in Lexington, SC. Owned and operated by Sebernia “Brina” Salmond, the six-month-old consignment store is stocked with fashionable clothing for older children and adults.  Abercrombie & Fitch, Aeropostale, American Eagle, Ann Taylor Loft, Banana Republic, Hollister, Ralph Lauren, Rock & Republic, True Religion, and 7 For All Mankind are some of the labels you’ll find. A small amount of department store brands—as well as shoes, handbags and belts—are sold as well.

“These clothes are in excellent condition because I’m picky about what I’m doing,” Brina said, explaining she accepts items no more than three years old. “I look at current fashion, and I like things that are trendy or edgy.”

A native of Kershaw County, Brina honed her talent for thrifty fashions after about five years of buying and selling clothes at yard sales and flea markets. Her storefront represents the realization of just one ambition. Future goals include selling young children’s clothing (sizes 4 – 14), establishing an online consignment store, and making house calls.

“A lot of people don’t want to be in the traffic or hustle and bustle of shopping,” she said. “Some people are homebound for various reasons. I wouldn’t mind going from home to home and presenting the retail I do sell.”

Bargain lovers, make note: From April 9 – 14, Brina’s Closet will offer 20 percent off any purchase of $50 or more.

Brina’s Closet is open Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Friday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Call 356-0882 for more information.

“You can’t help until you listen”

After about 30 years in sales and management, Don Taylor believes he’s learned a few things about conducting business. One deceptively simple slogan—“People do not care how much you know until they know how much you care”—has stuck with him ever since a good friend shared those words many years ago.

“You have to care about your customer’s business and honestly see if there is something you can do to help them be successful,” says Don, who owns the Lexington franchise of Town Planner. A popular community calendar, Town Planner includes ads and coupons for local businesses as well as marked dates for the Lexington community and school events. When making sales calls, Don tries to help the business owners decide whether to buy coupons or place ads.

“Some businesses are brand-building and that is what the ads at the top of the calendar deliver,” he explains. “The coupons physically bring people into the businesses. For restaurants, it is all about getting people in the door and that’s why coupons work so well for them. With service industries, it is about keeping their businesses in front of the public on a daily basis.  Brand and facial recognition is vital to their success and that is why I recommend using a photograph to implant them and their business in the public’s eye.”

One local restaurant owner was hesitant about offering a coupon because he wasn’t sure it would increase his volume of traffic, Don recalls. Later, the owner’s son sought Don out at the Chamber’s Small Business Celebration and said, “We never dreamed the coupons would be this successful!” That’s just one case in which Town Planner coupons have dramatically increased a customer’s business, Don says.

A Chamber Ambassador who taught and coached in Lexington in the 1970s, Don says he is pleased to be working where he grew up.  Later, as an account manager and district sales manager for Kellogg’s, he spent most of his time traveling to his accounts in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia.

“It has been a joy to become a member of the Chamber,” he says. “It allows me the opportunity to meet new people coming into our community and the privilege of getting reacquainted with folks I have known for years. When we have Chamber functions it underscores my belief that listening is more important than speaking. The good Lord gave us two ears and one mouth for a reason and  I believe we should listen twice as much as we speak—especially when the person you are talking to has gray hair!”
